James Kestner Easton, an aerospace pioneer whose work helped transform modern airborne radar, an adventurer who embraced the world’s beauty on two wheels, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died peacefully at age 95 on July 23 in Santa Barbara, California. Jim was born on May 3, 1931, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, the son of Evdokia Stewart and Bernard Easton. He inherited a remarkable family history that stretched from Russia to China to America. His maternal grandmother, Nina Batouieff, emigrated as a young girl from Russia to Tientsin (now Tianjin), China, where she met her future husband Earl Ragsdale, whose father was serving as US consul to China during the Boxer Rebellion. Their extraordinary story became part of a family heritage that shaped Jim’s lifelong curiosity about the world. After earning a bachelor’s degree in physics from Lafayette College, Jim began his engineering career, first working in sonar research in Baltimore and at Raytheon in Massachusetts and Rhode Island before joining the Hughes Aircraft Company in California. He proudly spent the next 30 years at Hughes, where he helped redefine modern radar technology. When Jim arrived at Hughes, he was one of the few engineers to bridge the worlds of sonar and radar through his expertise in signal processing. His technical vision and exceptional leadership propelled him through the organization, and he eventually became Group Vice President managing what is widely regarded as one of the world’s premier radar design organizations. Jim’s leadership helped transform jet radars from crude analog systems into sophisticated digital technology capable of tracking multiple aircraft simultaneously over vast distances. Programs that he helped launch—including radar systems for the F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, and F/A-18 Hornet—remain foundational to modern military aviation. Jim loved to joke about the importance of his work this way: “I worked for Hughes Aircraft Company for 30 years and ended up as Group Vice President and manager of the greatest radar design bureau in the world,” he would say with a sly smile. “If you don’t believe me, ask the KGB. I’m in their files.” The joke contained more than a little truth. During the height of the Cold War, Jim became an essential but largely unknown participant in one of the FBI’s most significant espionage investigations. When federal agents suspected that a Hughes radar engineer—who worked under Jim—was passing classified technologies to Soviet intelligence through a Polish spy ring, Jim secretly worked with the FBI while simultaneously preventing the suspected engineer from gaining access to highly classified stealth and advanced radar programs. The investigation ultimately led to the 1981 arrest and conviction of a Polish intelligence operative, with Jim testifying in federal court and explaining sophisticated radar technology to a jury. Despite his engineering accomplishments, Jim believed building and leading great teams was his greatest professional asset. “I learned the hard way that there are a lot of people out there who are smarter than I,” he said. “The way to get ahead in this world is to hire them to work for you.” His philosophy was simple: “Leadership is about leading—not driving, not coercing—but leading.” His colleagues remembered not only his intellect but also his humility, generosity, and ability to inspire exceptionally talented engineers to solve problems together. Following his retirement, Jim and his beloved wife Margaret “Meg” Caldwell Easton, who married in December, 1987, built a life centered on music, learning, and the outdoors. They became enthusiastic cyclists, exploring Europe and countless corners of the United States. Every spring they returned to Yosemite’s granite cliffs and waterfalls. Summers often found them in Santa Fe enjoying world-class opera. Both classical music enthusiasts, Jim especially loved J.S. Bach. As a small boy, Jim delighted in traveling alone by train across Pennsylvania to visit family. As a young father, he introduced his growing family to camping in the stunning national parks across the American West. Engineering was in Jim’s DNA from early on: During weekends at the family’s Rancho Palos Verdes, California home, he built televisions from Heath Kits and tinkered endlessly under car engines. He was an avid photographer who captured every family outing on video and in exquisite photos. Later in life, he was passionate about sharing his knowledge of advances in space exploration—which he often did as head of the current events group at Maravilla, the Santa Barbara community where he and Meg lived. “As a scientist,” he reflected, “I am absolutely enthralled by all the things we’re learning about our universe.” His advice to younger generations remained wonderfully concise: “Never stop learning.” Jim is survived by his wife of 39 years, Meg Easton; his four children and their spouses: James Easton and his wife Cheryl; Nina Easton Schriefer and her husband Russ; Marti Easton Sutton and her husband John; and Grant Easton and his wife Danna—as well as Jim’s stepson Jonathan Caldwell and his wife Julie. Jim passionately loved his grandchildren: Ryan and Marc Easton; Taylor and Danny Brownstein and Ellie Schriefer; Lindsey, Kendall and Griffin Sutton; and Luke, Connor, and Brooke Caldwell. He recently welcomed great-grandchildren Charlie and Emma Brownstein, and Emma and Alaina Easton. The family feels blessed that friends and family from far and wide joined in a May, 2026 celebration of Jim’s 95th birthday and his extraordinary life.
