Phillip Patrick Gerald Pipersburg Sr

Phillip Pipersburg, Sr. of Santa Barbara, passed away April 11, 2018. Born in Belize, British Honduras, Phillip and his twin sister Phillipa were the first of eight children born to Myrtle Pipersburg and the late W. Carlton Johnson. Phillip loved sharing stories with his wife and children about his childhood growing up in Belize. spending time on his grandparents’ plantation where he was able to run free and pick as much fruit from the trees as he could carry. Those memories brought sheer delight as he spoke of working in a lumber yard and helping his uncle build boats. Phillip attended Wesley Elementary School, where his Aunt Valerie was his teacher. She demanded that he read Webster’s Dictionary and spell at top speed. He enjoyed running, swimming, and playing soccer. His family moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1968. At the age of 14, Phillip won his first track and field event at Santa Barbara Junior High. He went on to run track at Santa Barbara High School, Santa Barbara City College, and Long Beach State University, where he majored in Anatomy and Kinesiology. Called “Belize’s Fastest Export”, Phillip was able to fulfill his dream as a sprinter in the 1984 Olympic Games, held in Los Angeles, California. Phillip married his High School Sweet Heart Lillian Rance, they had four beautiful children Regina, Melissa, Phillip Jr, and Candice Pipersburg- Johnson. Phillip has two grandchildren, Joshua Taylor Pipersburg and Cheyenne Lovingood and has one great granddaughter due in May 2018. Phillip and Lillian also assisted with the rearing of a host of Children in the Foster Care System. Phillip was a track and field coach at San Marcos High School and Santa Barbara City College. His career included 23 years as a peace officer with the Santa Barbara County Probation Department where he was respected and often recognized for his calm approach to solving conflicts. After retiring from the Probation Department Phillip served as an Elder at South Coast Church in Goleta, California under the leadership of Senior Pastor Rino Dattilo. Phillip was an Ordained Elder through the Church of God In Christ, Southern California First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. In 2010, Phillip answered God’s call, and established Visions of Hope, a Non-Profit, Faith Based, Cultural Awareness Organization. VOH promotes programs that Glorify God and bring the community together in unified worship. In Loving Memory, Phillip leaves, his devoted wife Lillian, four children Regina, Melissa, Phillip Jr. and Candice, 2grandchildren: Josh and Cheyenne, a great granddaughter due May 2018 and 4 foster children, his loving mother Myrtle Harris, four brothers; Edwin Pipersburg, Wayne Orosco, Jamesette Orosco and Ambrose Harris; two Sisters; Phillipa Pipersburg- Marsh and Evelyn Pipersburg Johnson, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Phillip is preceded by his father W. Carlton Johnson, his sister Carole Orosco Ijewere, his aunt Yvonne McNair and his grandmother Rosalyn Stone.
