Carol Somerville Cory

Carol Somerville Cory passed away peacefully on July 1, 2013. She was 89 years old. Carol was born on December 25, 1923, in Evanston, Illinois, to John and Corinne Patton Somerville. The day she was born, the nurses at the hospital went to her mother’s room with lit candles. Seeing the candles, her mother thought, “I must be in Heaven.” The nurses were there to sing Christmas carols. Carol was named because of that special event. She attended elementary school in Chicago with the family spending winters in Sarasota, Florida. She attended Northampton School for Girls and Bradford Junior College, both located in Massachusetts. Following her education, Carol worked for NBC Television as a Tour Guide and a Receptionist in New York City. She kept getting promoted and finally worked her way up to the Continuity Acceptance Department. Carol loved it at NBC! Carol married Ace R. Cory on May 7, 1949, residing in Kansas City, Missouri, and Omaha, Nebraska. Following a divorce in 1966, Carol relocated to Santa Barbara, California. Carol enjoyed all kinds of music, art and traveling. She loved Christmas, especially decorating the house and playing carols. She cherished her pets like family. She found great satisfaction serving as a “Pink Lady” at Cottage Hospital. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, John and Corinne Somerville; and sister, Suzanne Faulkner. She is survived by her brother, John Somerville, Jr., of Fair Haven, New Jersey; sister, Corinne Repsold of Vancouver, Washington; son, Jeff Cory or Kremmling, Colorado; daughters, Catherine Fernandez (Phil) of Holualoa, Hawaii; Kimberly Wann (Jim) of Torrington, Wyoming; grandsons, Dylan Wann of Lubbock, Texas; and Alex Wann, of Torrington, Wyoming; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to all the staff at Valle Verde for their many years of loving care for Mrs. Cory. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 pm, Wednesday, September 18, 2013, in the Health Center Activities Room at Valle Verde. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite Animal Shelter or charity in Carol’s name.
