Mary Ann Tolan

With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of our beloved Mary Ann Tolan (Bushnell), who peacefully passed away on May 23, 2023, at the age of 88. The world has lost a remarkable soul whose presence touched the lives of all who knew her. Born on February 13, 1935, in Helena, Montana, Mary Ann was the cherished daughter of Henry William Bushnell and Anna Marigold Herrin. She held a special place as the loving sister of Henry Purington Bushnell and Linda Lee Bushnell. Mary Ann's journey was forever intertwined with her adoring husband, James D. Tolan. Their love story spanned nearly six decades, and they recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on April 3rd. Their union, born out of fate and a chance encounter in 1963, blossomed into a lifetime of shared joys, laughter, and treasured memories. Her heart overflowed with pride and joy as she embraced her role as a doting grandmother to 11 grandchildren: Joshua, Cameron, Dan, Sam, James, Rebecca, Jennifer, Sarah, Robert Jr, Mikayla, and 17 great-grandchildren: Zachary, Michael, Candace, Austin, Nicholas, Andrew, Anthony, Lucas, Shelby, Ashley, Harper, Elwyn, Nevaeh, Faith, Noah, Liberty, and Belle. Her family brought her immeasurable happiness, and she cherished every moment spent in their company. In her professional life, Mary Ann achieved great success, leaving an indelible mark in all that she pursued. Following her tenure at Title Insurance & Trust Company, she dedicated herself to the Sheriff's Department. Starting in the jail's transportation department, Mary Ann courageously transported female prisoners. She later became a respected correctional officer until her retirement, admired for her unwavering dedication and professionalism. Mary Ann emanated love and unwavering devotion as a mother to her children: David Tolan (wife Paula), Ginger Dunn, and Robert Tolan (wife Cheryl). Mary Ann Tolan's life extended far beyond her professional accomplishments, as she discovered happiness in pursuing her cherished hobbies and passions. She possessed a remarkable green thumb and nurtured vibrant gardens, pouring her love and care into her beloved roses. Music resonated deep within her soul, as beautiful melodies flowed from her stereo and piano. Traveling was a passion, as she embraced the thrill of exploring new destinations. Engaging in a friendly game of cards, lively bunco nights, and hosting gatherings brought her immense joy. However, it was during Christmas that her spirit truly thrived. With unparalleled enthusiasm, she transformed every nook and cranny of her home into a dazzling display of festive decorations, capturing the essence and magic of the season for all to revel in and cherish. Mary Ann Tolan's absence leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of her family and friends. Her legacy of love, laughter, infectious smile, wonderful sense of humor and compassion will forever echo in our hearts and memories. May Mary's soul find eternal peace, and may we find comfort in the enduring love and cherished memories she gifted us. She will forever remain in our hearts, a beacon of light guiding us through life's journey. A Celebration of Life to honor Mary Ann Tolan will be held on Saturday, June 3rd @ 11 am at Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapel, 15 East Sola Street, Santa Barbara, CA.
